Botulinum toxin for Therapeutics

How it Works:

Stress causes the nervous system to initiate muscle spasms which then contract and squeeze the muscles, creating pain and soreness.  Nerves located in these contracted muscles become compressed, initiating TMJ symptoms, including headaches.  The muscles that we chew with, located in and around the neck, face, and head and shoulder areas, are integrated with pain pathways.  By injected small, diluted amounts of botulinum toxin into these spastic muscles, we can prevent the muscles from squeezing the nerves and in turn, reduce the pain to these areas.

Is Botulinum Toxin Use Safe?

Yes for most people.  Botulinum toxin is temporary, and it wears off in approximately 3 months.  Some people who have had repeated toxin treatments has noted that the effects last longer than 3 months.  The FDA approved botulinum toxin for chronic migraines and facial pain as a primary treatment in 2011.  It has been deemed relatively safe for most procedures in healthy individuals.
